Our mission is to bring amazing art, live music and creative workshops to the South West. As a charity and multi-arts venue, we’ve been enriching the cultural life of our community for almost 30 years from a former historic church in the heart of Ilminster. Here, you can enjoy world-class musicians, wonderful art exhibitions and get as creative as you like in a wide range of art and craft classes for all abilities.
We also have a boutique shop, selling handmade gifts from local craft makers, and a scrumptious café famous for its cheese scones.
Performances
Julian has played concert, club, festivals and broadcasting dates with his own band and with the great’s of jazz like George Chisholm, Don Lusher, Kenny Baker and Cleo & John Dankworth. Sir John Dankworth stated “Julian is the best clarinettist to emerge in British jazz for decades”.

A rare chance to hear one of the UK's top swing violinists, Emma Fisk, with top jazz pianist Mike Denham.
There are few more joyous sounds than that of the sweet jazz violin and Emma Fisk echoes the intricate lines once played by Stephane Grappelli, but with her own musical identity.

The south-west’s favourite gypsy jazz and hot swing band has a well-earned reputation for its take on the ‘Hot Club’ style. Toe-tapping rhythms and soaring melodies combine in a virtuoso performance of gypsy favourites, jazz standards, soulful ballads and Latin swing, all played with the verve and joy that is the heart of this music.

Praised for her “technical mastery” Icelandic-American cellist Geirþrúður Anna Guðmundsdóttir’s distinctive artistic voice, combines sensitivity with a bold and fiery stage presence. She has performed at venues across the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Southbank Centre. Naïve Records Exclusive Artist and multi-award winner, pianist Antoine Préat is being noticed for his “distinctive voice” and strong musical convictions.

Ruth Notman is a folk singer/songwriter from Nottingham who first rocketed into the music scene in 2007, at 18 years old, with her debut album ‘Threads’ which gained support from luminaries such as BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris and Kate Rusby.
Notman teamed up with BBC Radio 2 Folk Award-winning artist Sam Kelly in 2019 to record their album ‘Changeable Heart’ with Kate Rusby’s label, Pure Records.

In May 2016 he became the first harpist ever to win the Guildhall Gold Medal – the Guildhall’s most prestigious prize. Gabriela Opacka-Boccadoro is a Polish-British musician who has built a career as a violinist, conductor, and recording artist across classical performance, theatre, and film. She holds a PhD in violin from the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.

Workshops
A friendly, untutored clay group enjoying making hand built pottery and sculpture. Beginners welcome and helped to start with some clay, the group tool kit, library and masses of helpful advice.
The group meets every Mondays, 9:30am to 12:30pm.

Everyone has a story to tell — but how do you turn your memories into a memoir that truly engages readers? In this five-week course, you’ll learn how to shape your life experiences into a compelling narrative.
We will cover
Where to start, structuring your work, what to include and what to leave out, and fictional techniques.

Exploring Inks
Delve into the world of ink in this one day workshop where you can discover the wonderful ways that ink can be used to create exciting paintings. Margaret Micklewright is an experienced tutor who has been using ink for many years as her main painting media. She will explain the techniques and methods that she has discovered in using this surprisingly colourful medium.
Please bring heavyweight watercolour paper (ideally 300gms), synthetic brushes and a water sprayer. Ink will be provided by the tutor

Create a Batik textile art using wax-resist dying to create unique patterns and designs on fabric.
Once your batik has been completed and dried you shall take your cloth off the frame and iron off all of the wax. It shall then be stapled to a plain canvas that you can take home and place on a wall immediately

Combining watercolour paints with calligraphy gives beautiful results and the two together can be used to complement each other when making cards or even a piece of wall art that you can frame. In this workshop you will learn the basics of calligraphy using a specially designed workbook which is yours to take home and keep practising. You will then work on some small projects and produce your own beautiful works of art using your newly found skill. Your tutor, Nicki Darling-Finan, will give you individual support as you learn. A pop-up shop will be available at the class should you wish to purchase extra supplies such as cards, paper, pens or watercolour paints. You don't need to bring anything - just yourself and lots of enthusiasm but feel free to bring an apron if you wish.

Exploring Acrylic Techniques – a 4-week painting course with Stephen Jenkinson
For Abstracts; Semi-Abstracts and Impressionist Landscapes
This course is led by enthusiastic artist and tutor Stephen Jenkinson. It is ideal for everyone - for those who are completely new to the techniques that Stephen introduces, and those who have attended previous standalone workshops and want to refresh and develop their painting skills further. Experience the whole painting process: from preparation, through applying layers of pure vibrant colour and producing striking images with beautiful effects, to finishing your final images for mounting and framing.

Make your own Calligraphy Family Tree with tutor, Nicki Darling-Finan
Unique to ND Calligraphy, this workshop is for lovers of family history and those interested in calligraphy. In this three-hour class, you will learn to design your own family tree which will be a lovely addition to your home or even to give as a keepsake. A previous beginner’s class (in dip pen or brush pen) is recommended for this workshop and a dip pen for beginners is being held at IAC in January. When your design is drawn up, you will hand colour it using brush pens and adding gold accents. Your masterpiece is then ready to frame! Please make a list of the family members you wish to add to your tree, ideally between 12-15 names. Feel free to bring an apron if you wish. All materials supplied by ND Calligraphy are vegan and cruelty-free.

In this two-hour workshop, you will learn the techniques necessary to produce beautiful lettering. A specially designed workbook will be provided and is yours to take home and keep practising. You will also take away your own professional brush pen trio so that you can continue your new hobby at home. We are delighted to announce that the restoration of Ilminster Arts Centre's historic stained glass window is now complete, with the beloved feature fully restored and returned to its rightful place, more resplendent than ever.
Ilminster Arts Centre is proud to present The Frog Lane Painters Exhibition. This special exhibition, running from 15th October to 9th November 2024, highlights the journey and growth of these artists, many of whom began as complete beginners at IAC’s popular acrylic painting classes.
