Local Landscapes in Oils: the Power of Light

Join the overall winner of the 2023 Ilminster Arts Centre Open Exhibition, to explore using oils to create atmospheric and expressive landscapes. In this course Annie Musgrove will focus on how to use light in the landscape to add interest and drama.

With the Blackdown Hills, Exmoor and the Quantocks we have plenty of moody upland landscapes on our doorstep. Over the course of the day you will learn how to start from an image to abstract key elements and add depth to your compositions resulting in your own unique response to the landscape. Annie’s approach is to encourage experimentation, mark making and play to push the boundaries of your work and give you confidence in making a start on new work.
Annie will demonstrate her approach to oil painting using palette knives, rags, sticks and other materials and share many hard-won lessons on composition and technique. Annie is an experienced tutor and will give plenty of hands-on help and discussion time. So, whether you are a complete beginner or an artist looking for a different challenge you are very welcome.
Materials: Prepared paper, mark making tools and materials are included in the price. However, you are encouraged to bring your own sketchbooks, oil paints/water-based oil paints and tools. Annie will be working on a 50 cm x 50 cm painting from an image. A selection of images will be available but it would be good if you brought your own images to work from.
