Blackdown Acapella and Somer Singers

Ilminster Arts Centre is delighted to give a first-time welcome to two local singing groups, renowned for their glorious, unaccompanied vocal harmonies: Blackdown Acapella and Somer Singers.

Somer Singers

is a mixed-voice, four-part vocal harmony group drawn from the Somerton, Langport and Ilminster areas of Somerset, and we have been singing together now since 2015, although our line-up has changed substantially since then.  We are currently 14 members strong, and we sing unaccompanied arrangements in ‘a cappella’ style.

We sing at a variety of functions – occasionally at residential homes, also at parties, and often at community events, and in concert.  We made our Ilminster debut in May 2023, supporting the Ilminster Community Choir at the Warehouse Theatre.

Our repertoire includes songs from the 60’s through to the noughties, ranging from pop classics to mighty ballads, along with a smattering of blues, gospel and show tunes. But in short, we are simply a group of friends who just love to sing together’!

Blackdown Acapella

Blackdown Acapella is an all-female singing group with a passion for learning, and a commitment to creating excellent music.

We formed in 2021 and have grown from 15 to 37 members! We work hard, enjoy each other’s company, and have fun while performing at the highest level.  We are coached by award-winning acapella singer and director Kirstie Spencer, who has the ability to get the best from every member of the chorus whilst supporting individual development too.  We share our ambitions and goals as a group, with our emphasis on learning and education as well as becoming an award winning chorus.  We sing four-part arrangements in the barbershop style but also arrangements of many popular songs ranging from to Lady Gaga’s ‘Shallow ‘ to ‘Mr Blue Sky’, taking on songs from shows too!

We belong to the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) and we compete nationally, each October.

Performance starts at 7:30pm, doors from 6:30pm with cash bar available.
